i got up at 2:30am to study. but my head feels like swiss cheese right now.
anyway, for some reason, i feel like sharing a cool NY experience: on sat, i was running a bit late for tina's b-day celeb, so i hailed a cab from my school. when i got in the cab, i noticed that the driver was young. also, he was eating, and didn't seem to be in a rush to get going. he seemed content to just sit there and munch on his thing for several minutes before we got going. i was feeling a bit rushed, but what the heck. i don't like to let stuff that happens in the world rile me, so i just sat back, listening to the the drumming of rain. the dude finally gets going, and then, offers me a bite of his food. i guess he was feeling bad that he was eating in the car while driving. it smelled pretty good, probably a gyro or something, but dude, i wasn't about to take a bite out of his sandwich. i don't know him! anyway, i thought it was super funny, but was touched that he offered. and it was a genuine offer, extending his sandwich thru the divider. no fake courtesy offers from this guy. "no thanks," i said, "i'm actually headed to meet with some friends for dinner right now." he asked me what i was doing in the city, answered his own question, seeing as how he picked me up in front of the medical center, then asked me where i went to undergrad. "JHU." "oh really? do you know a guy named I***?" "yeah, i do. he went to JHU and NYU med. i know his gf, too. how do you know him?" "ah, he and i went to the same mosque." so we chatted up about our friends, having found a bizarre connection. i asked him when he came to the US. he was turkish/egyptian, came to the US at 19 for college. had to go to a place he didn't particularly like b/c of $$, wanted to go to grad school, go into clinical psychology, but again, didn't have $$, so was doing the cab thing until he saved enough to pay his pay through grad school. we talked about our families, what they were doing, the way our families were different, how middle eastern culture was different from asian american culture, how different ppl raised their kids differently. a helter-skelter type conversation. it was great. i was actually sorry when we reached haru. i had really enjoyed talking with this guy. i thanked him, shook hands with him, parted with a "good night, my friend. it was nice to meet you." and walked away, wondering at how strange new york was. yakob at 6:09 AM |
