    medicine: wk 6, day 33

yesterday's call was terrible. stayed until nearly midnight for no good apparent reason.

today, we had a "touchy feel -y (sp?)" session, where we vented out some of our frustrations. we all ended up laughing, because some of the stories were too ridiculous. as one of my classmates said, "it's as though we are living in birmingham, alabama in the 1950's." we had a good laugh at it only because it seemed so true. our basic rights as people were being taken away and we were being treated as something less, "a turd two inches off the ground," as one put it so eloquently.

i'll share some of the stories here:

    the computer
in one of the doctor's offices, there are 5 members to a team, and only four computers. so one person cannot use a computer to write notes, enter orders, etc. guess who it is. yes, the medical student. but is (s)he ASKED to get off the comp? no, of course not. "get off, i need to used the computer," is usually how the request is submittted.

now, that in itself is not that bad, except that the perpetrator will look up after a while and say, "hey, you're not doing anything, right? can you pick up the food?" the medical student can't refuse, because he wants to be a team player. after doing this EVERY DAY, however, it gets pretty irritating.

    the elevator
at a particular hospital, the elevators are slow and always packed. one day, the medical student was riding a crowded elevator near the front of the elevator doors. the elevator stopped at a floor, where the student recognized a resident from a different team. the resident looks at him, and jerks with his thumb: "you, get out."

the medical student is stunned and doesn't have enough time to think or stand up for himself, so he gets out.

    ***
as we listened to these stories, we laughed until we almost cried, just imagining the scenes. but as we laughed, a big part of us was sad, thinking of this profession where it is somehow ok to strip us of common courtesy (a homeless guy would seriously not be treated as rudely as we are treated), and how we would probably respond in the same way the others did, and just obey.

    :(

on the bright side, kobe is tearing up the league, and had another 42 pt game, in only THREE quarters. i live vicariously through him. go kobe.
