just got back from a christmas eve service at my parent's church, which will remain unnamed.

i don't know if it is because i've been reading a prayer for owen meany, or if it is because i'm older now and have forgotten the agony of actually being up front and performing terrible skits and songs, but christmas pageants are becoming incredibly funny.

for part of the evening, a group of 15 or so jhs students were dressed in white, on their knees, in prayer before beginning their song/body worship. all except one kid, who was doing a little jig with a huge grin on his face. then, when the song started, everyone was doing such a wonderful job, except the same kid, who was 2 big steps behind everyone else. he didn't practice, he didn't know any of the movements, and he didn't care a whit. he went through the whole thing with a great big smile. maybe if he tried to blend in, to hide, it might not have been so funny. but he HAD to wear a black crooked suit to go along with his antics.

i am convinced that he will grow up to be a junDo...

the little kids were crazy cute. i don't expect high quality performances anymore. i enjoy the screwups and the awkwardness a lot more in my old age.

the young pastor gave a nice sermon. very short and to the point. simply this: christmas isn't about your having fun and a good time. it's not even about family. it's about the birth of Christ.

how strange would it be if people came to a birthday party, and gave only gifts to each other, but not to the person whose birthday it is? it would be ridiculous, and a insult to the person.

and yet this is how we celebrate the birth of christ, every year. it was a real good smackdown and awakening sermon in the midst of cute skits, acts, and performances.
