ok, so i'm not asleep yet. sue me, brian. too many things to do, and too many things on my mind. at least i'm not on im, right? small steps at a time.

today, i got an email from steve michaels about the international society of poets summer convention and sympostium:

    Dear Jacob,

Because you requested that we notify you of important poetic events, I am delighted to inform you that in just a few weeks, we will be honoring your poetic accomplishments at poetry.com’s and the International Society of Poets’ Summer Convention and Symposium, to be held at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C. from August 23-25, 2002.

When you attend the Convention and Symposium, you will present your poetry in front of your fellow poets from around the world (Our last convention was celebrated by over 2500 poets from 58 countries worldwide!), and you will be presented with your International Poet of Merit Silver Award Bowl.

The Award is a magnificent work of art (a $175.00 value) that measures over 10 inches across and over 10 inches high, handcrafted in silver, with your name custom-engraved on a beautiful cherry wood base (see it here). I’m sure it will merit a special place of pride in your home. Your award is so large and heavy that you may wish to bring an extra suitcase to carry it home!

Our Conventions routinely sell out, and this event will be no exception. Please RSVP as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. To register now, click here, or go to http://www.poetry.com/poetscorner/register.asp.

We look forward to seeing you!

    Steve Michaels
    Convention Awards Chairperson

P.S. Please note that we have formally notified you by U.S. Mail about your Poet of Merit Silver Bowl Award.

ok, so i got a letter in the mail about this a while back, was kinda excited about it, but then forgot about it till now, with this email.

i'm not sure what to do, if anything... i submitted a poem to poetry.com when i was in h.s., mostly as a lark, once in college, and once in med school. (i have much more silly material on my computer now, and had even more on my computer before i lost all the data on my HD a year ago.) i've gotten letters from them saying that my poems will be in anthologies that they were putting together, etc, etc. which is very nice.

but this, this is starting to look and sound more genuine, or better at sounding genuine. click on the link for the bowl. that's a pretty big sucker. 10 inches wide. it says,

"international poet of merit award. JACOB LEE. by the international society of poets."

i would like to have it so that i can put my basketball in it. (that way, it won't roll around in my room like it does now) but do you know how much the convention in DC costs? $500 to $600!!!! oh man, who do they think i am? i don't have that kinda money. a part of me wants to believe that they really like what i wrote, and the realistic part of me is thinking, do they think i'm such a sucker to pay that much money to listen to ppl read poetry? i don't care if the bowl is worth $175 or whatever they say. that's still $325 or $425 that's going where? (into their little pockets...) they probably invited thousands of wannabe poets for their little thing...trying to sucker ppl like me to going with that silver bowl...

so, i would like some advice...should i even consider going? i'm leaning towards not going... what the heck am i thinking? to go, i would have to ask my parents for that money, or get more fed loans. the thing is, i think my parents would give me the money. they're very unkorean and impractical like that. they dig stuff like this, esp my dad, who is proud of my slight abilities in non-academic things, and who for some reason thinks i can be an artist and stuff even after i tell him that i have no genius in me, and thus will always be mediocre.
