i've started research. my favorite part by far is the surgery.

we get rabbits (which are pretty big, a little bigger than cats), take out their eyes, and then run experiments on their retinas.

i did my first surgery on one yesterday. got it on my first try without detaching the retina. :)

it's funny, i remember how in jh, hs, i used to think: "oh, those evil scientists, why do they run experiments on animals?! it's so cruel!"

hahahaha

i think we're pretty humane, though. we keep them warm with a little blankie, talk to them as they are being anesthetized, etc.

....of course then i cut off their eyelids, pull on the eyeball, and snip off the optic nerve and ophthalmic artery. voila! free eyeball in my hand!

(rabbits look a little strange with no eyeballs...)
