    plastics wk 2, day 1

rated R, for disturbing content. (first of all, i would like to say that i'm not tryint to be gross, just describing what i saw. also, i don't mean to be disrespectful to this patient in any way.)

saw pretty much the strangest thing i've ever seen in my life. pt with ears, nose, and eye missing. could see the empty eye socket, hole where the nose had been (could see eVERYTHING, very deep). multiple surgeries in the past to take out cancer. looked like a skull with rubber pieces to fill in facial defects. with a fixed, glass eye.

so what was the cause of all this?! ACNE.

acne?! yes, acne. back in the day, treatment for acne was radiation. radiation, which caused cancer in this guy. surgeons took out huge chunks of him in an attempt to take the cancer out.

and we did that again, today.

opened the skull, took out cancer from the brain.

with pliers, pulled out some teeth. (you know that expression, "like pulling teeth?" i now know the full meaning of that)

with electric saw, cut into his face. bone flying everywhere.

with wedge and heavy steel SLEDGEHAMMER (??!!! i was freaking out behind my mask. cringing and praying when he actually used it to whack into and take out a quarter of the bones in the face) everyone in the room was watching with horrified eyebrows (all i could see over their masks). this sledgehammer thing was craziness. my stomach turned over 4 times. if my small eyes could have popped out of their sockets, they would have.

when they were done, there was a gaping, bloody hole. some teeth left. times like this, you hear a slow, quiet drawn out, "holy ****," all around you. a surgeon says grimly, "it's like halloween." no one laughed.

how is this guy ALIVE? deep inside you, a voice says that a person can't be alive after such large chunks of the head have been removed. but here he is, quite alive. quite a pleasant person. a wonderful person. with an active, intelligent mind.

i learned you can hold your eyebrows arched in horror for 7 hours and be deeply, deeply sorrowful for the same time.

lesson: if you have acne, SUCK IT UP and don't complain.

    *******
to lighten the mood, HOW AWESOME ARE THE LAKERS?!

i laugh in the face of all the laker-haters. you can bet your booty that all the other teams were feeling deflated, watching that game. kobe was unbelievable. shaq is still the intimidating monster. even d-fish and fox were hitting 3's. and mad dog just leashed KG.

i love KG, i love his game, but the MVP isn't his until he wins a playoff series. i feel bad for this guy. 7 straight 1st round exits. well, it's your fault, dude. your contract is so huge, the wolves can't sign better players.

they said it: (kobe) "I don't know what the big deal is about playing on the road,'' he said. "I've never seen fans scream loud enough to block my jump shot.''

look at that face. if i weren't a laker fan, i'd want to punch that smirk off his face. HAHAHAHAHA. so smug, so smug. winners can have such nice smiles. :D

the day of the Resurrection. as CP put it, this is the true independence day. thank you, God.

    Redeemer
    Nicole C. Mullen

Who taught the sun where to stand in the morning?
Who told the ocean you can only come this far?
Who showed the moon where to hide 'til evening?
Whose words alone can catch a falling star?

Well I know my Redeemer lives
    I know my Redeemer lives
    All of creation testify
    This life within me cries
    I know my Redeemer lives

The very same God that spins things in orbit
He runs to the weary, the worn and the weak
And the same gentle hands that hold me when I'm broken
They conquered death to bring me victory

Now I know my Redeemer lives
    I know my Redeemer lives
    Let all creation testify
Let this life within me cry
I know my Redeemer, He lives

    To take away my shame
And He lives forever, I'll proclaim
That the payment for my sin
Was the precious life He gave
    But now He's alive and
    There's a new day

Now I know my Redeemer lives
    I know my Redeemer lives
    Let all creation testify
Let this life within me cry
I know my Redeemer, He lives
