a day of hooky culminating with an evening with Vienna Teng at the cutting room

there is something about a girl that can sing. and i realized a big big weakness of mine. it is too easy for me to develop a crush on a girl that can sing well, even without knowing her at all. and she's not even cute! (sorry, vienna, i hope you're not reading this...) don't worry, i'm not in love with her. but i had to fight it. haha.

vienna (not her real name, apparently) can take you into a story/life so easily. like she said herself, she is short story-teller. her lyrics are original; the product of her sensitivity to her environment and a great imagination. and listening to her live and hearing the background to each song was sweet.

but what a voice! not the greatest voice i've heard, to be sure. but the range of emotion and feel to her voice is really something. a variation of texture of voice, i would say.

but what really enraptured me: she was really into her songs. she OWNED her songs. she knew each note and pause so intimately that you could feel the cradle and care, and then the power and drive behind her lyrics. there is a difference btwn someone singing and/or performing a song vs. someone MEANING the song. as if something happened to her right then, and the song had risen spontaneously.

    quite a thrill.

afterwards, bought her cd and got in line to get it autographed. i didn't want to just stand there while she signed it, so i resolved to talk to her.

    the convo:

me: hi! my name is jacob (remembered my name correctly, this time)
    vienna: hi!
me: thank you for performing. i really enjoyed it. (so smooth, eh?)
    vienna: thanks!
me: i love your song, "lulluby for a stormy night." i wake up to it, actually.
    vienna: uh... thanks?
    me: .....
    vienna: .....

(ducks her head and signs my cd)

me: well, good luck with everything!
    vienna: thanks!

well, i don't know what i was expecting. but i was very proud of myself for being so bold. I AM NOW A GROWN MAN.

    RWOAR!!!!

look out, WOMANKIND! i HAVE BEEN UNLEASHED!!!!
