    THOUGHT PROVOKING STORIES, Part 1

story #1 (part of beijing bicycle)
there was once a child who had been promised a bike every christmas and birthday for 3 yrs. every one of his friends had bikes.

his father, who was poor, scrapped as much money as he could, but something always came up and he could not buy the son a bike. the father was terribly sad about it, but what could he do? food, heat, and clothes were more important, he thought.

the son only knew that every single one of his friends had bikes. and so he was miserable.

    story #2 (from poisonwood bible)
there was once a missionary who took his large family of wife and 5 daughters to africa, to preach and spread the gospel.

he preached fervently to the natives, who were fascinated by this man who shouted and gestured with wild movements, but they did not understand a word he said.

the missionary's wife and daughters were lonely. they tried to maintain life as they knew it, but they had no food, no way of acquiring food, and had no way of communicating with the natives. there were some english-speaking families a wk's distance away, but the missionary never took his family there, because there was too much work to be done HERE, he thought.

the missionary, afire with passion, saw that his family was unhappy, that they were looking a little peaked, but when he looked out into the village, and saw all those who didn't know God he was consumed with zeal.

one day, the 2nd youngest daughter came down with a fever. she hadn't been taking the pills the others had. she acquired malaria, and died. upon losing one of her children, the mother, who had been the backbone of the family, seemed to lose her spirit and did nothing but sit, dazed. the oldest daughter, who had been preparing to make her social debut before leaving their home of georgia, was suddenly forced into running the household. under the pressure of taking care of the family, she found comfort in the arms of a foul-mouthed, ill-mannered english-speaking man who passed by occasionally.

the missionary began to spend more time in the village, preaching louder, longer. he himself grew thin, his hair and clothes wild, but his eyes sparkled with fire.

several days later, the youngest was bitten by a snake and within hours, was dead.

when informed that her baby was dead, the mother suddenly gained life, gathered her daughters, and began walking towards the nearest city, a weeks walk away. the eldest abandoned them the 2nd night, and ran off with her lover.

the mother did not stop to wait, but gathered her remaining 2 daughters, and kept walking. 4 days later, they arrived in the nearest town.2 yrs later, they made it back to the US.

(Part 2 to be continued tomorrow)
