    some interesting points from today:

    1) attendings and residents use the word, "crazy" quite flippantly for a psych ward.

    2) my resident asked a patient to take a piece of paper, fold it in half, and then place it on the floor. pt's response: "whaaaaaaat?!!" with a disgusted look on his face. you had to see it. it was like, "what would make you ask me to do such a stupid, crazy and useless thing?" i was struggling really hard not to laugh. i was really yukking it up inside...at least until the pt proceeded to fold the paper into quarters and then place it on his bed. then, my emotions did a 180, and i was struggling not to cry. poor old man.

    3) ECT- electroconvulsive therapy. i thought they got rid of this crazy thing in the 1930s?!

    4) psych ER attending during tour and orientation: "quite frequently, you will see us tackling patients, slapping restraints on them, and being very physical with them. they will cry, moan, whatever. under no circumstances are you to take their side. you will not interfere nor hinder with what is going on. you will never talk to the patient while something like this is in progress. if you want, you may join us in restraining."

i was pretty stunned by that very bold and scary statement. the doc then explained why. someone who had spent a lot of time with the patient will have decided that it was necessary. thus it is bad for anyone, whether (s)he be a medical student or a attending, to interfere with less information. also, patients who are frightened and wild will respond worse if there are different opinions being expressed about his/her care, and will be more confused. presentation of the united front.

after more reflection, i began to understand what he meant. and realized the wisdom of what he was saying. still, i have a paranoia of restraints. surely there is a word for that. anyone know it? albert, mr. i-memorized-all-the-SAT-vocabulary-that-starts-with-an-"A," where are you when i need you, my friend? hahaha. sorry. jk. albert is a deep well of vocabulary. i don't think i know anyone who knows as much vocab as him. then again, i don't know anyone who misuses words as frequently as he does. hahahaHAHAHAHA!!! sorry again. sheesh. i gotta stop before albert gets mad at me.
