we have a adolescent pt who presented with classic signs of PID (pelvic inflammatory disease from gonorrhea, clamydia infection). everyone is sure that she has PID.
the only problem: you get PID after having sex. and this girl was adamantly denying every having sex.
the peds residents doubted her, but left her alone.
later on that day, an ob/gyn came in and confronted the patient. told her that the only way one gets PID was via sexual intercourse. pretty much accused her of it. demanded of her why her hymen was broken. stuff like that. left the poor girl in tears. for the entire morning.
later, cultures came back. turns out that she is negative for gonorrhea and clamydia. her symptoms were caused by something else. something not necessarily sexually transmitted.
poor girl.

working on the peds floor, i have one big question: WHO THE HECK IS SPONGE BOB?
barney, i have heard of. teletubbies, i have heard of. i have never heard of sponge bob. but apparently, he is quite popular. it's funny, you would think that toys would be more cooler and complex as we get older, but they seem to get lamer. i mean, c'mon. a SPONGE? do these kids KNOW how lame that is? monsters are cool, animals are cool, but a household cleaning product that is inanimate and mundane? that is like trying to make a hero out of the roll of paper towel. whoever convinced kids to like sponge bob is a genius.

spent a long time attending to the never-ending task of cleaning my room. for the first time in wks, it looks like i'm making some progress. it's a bit cleaner. and smells of cucumber melon. (from scented candle) :D
