    surgery wk 2, day 9

there is a girl on my service who seems to have MR (mental retardation). when i go to change her dressing, she'll grimace, fight and dig her nails into my hands. it's quite painful, actually.

but when i'm done, she looks up at me with the sweetest smile, like i just gave her the best present in the world. she holds on to my hands gently and firmly, and won't let me go. the act is so innocent, so childlike, so happy and oblivious to everything else, that i always indulge in this for several minutes, while my team is rushing away.

it's an isolated peaceful little moment in this hectic life.
