    medicine: wk 3, day 20. WARNING: rated PG-16

    a monumental victory: one of my patients has been bedridden for months. even sitting up in his bed will get him huffing and puffing.

    today, when our team went to round, he was able to stand up for the first time. he was so excited that he cried out in a loud voice, "victory!!!"
    with a wide grin he exclaimed, "i'm doing pretty good!"

    we had to smile and feel good about helping him.

    right in front of us, he began to celebrate. ....and became short of breath. and had to sit down. it was a short-lived victory.

    when some patients get heart failure, fluid accumulates. you get edema. ankles swell up. hepatic circulation gets backed up. fluid accumulates in other areas, too. like your scrotum.

    this is a common phenomena where i work. it's pretty ghastly to see. the scrotum swells up so much, it becomes the size of a melon, and obscures the penis.

    apparently, some genius designed a scrotal support for it. here, it is called, the "bellevue bridge." imagine, if you will, a melon-sized engorged scrotom supported by a little bridge.... never mind, don't imagine it. the visual is too much....
