Pat made some valuable comments (always original and deep, classic pat) that I thought were too precious to leave alone in the comments section. so, i thought i'd bring it to the open, for you to ponder.

    Pat:
i was thinking about guys and girls, and how guys have this reputation of being superficial. now i'm gonna generalize here (how can i not?).

girls (and guys) say guys are superficial because we tend to look at girls' faces and bodies and whatnot. we seem to focus on external, visible features.

on the other hand, girls (and guys) say that girls aren't superficial because they say that "personality" matters more to girls. ("so he's not the best looking guy... but he's got a nice personality!")

it's as if liking someone's personality is any less shallow than liking someone's looks. a personality is just an (external) interface with the outside world. it's just how a person tends to act. that is, the term,"personality" represents nothing more than a glorified facade... how is it different to be attracted to how someone looks over how someone acts?

also, when someone complains about the lack of mystery that comes from relational intimacy, that person is merely revealing that he or she has never bothered to look beyond the superficial (or doesn't want to). i think if people would plumb the depths of their own hearts, they would know that they themselves are mysterious in many ways. if that is the case, how can someone else be any less mysterious, no matter how well you know him or her?

you know? can i get a what what?

    Pat

(i love pat: "can i get a what what?" oh my goodness. haha)
