i'm getting pretty tired of studying microbiology. seems like they all cause diarrhea. i should actually know them better because of this, seeing as how my conversations with people somehow always end up as poop stories. some interesting facts:
enterotoxogenic E. Coli: causes watery diarrhea (looks like rice water) by inhibiting reabsorption of Na+, Cl-, and stimulating secretion of Cl- and HCO3-. ferments lactose. enterohemorrhagic E. Coli: causes bloody diarrhea with a shiga-like toxin (YUM!), by inhibiting the 60s ribosome, killing the cell. leads of cramps and hemorrhagic colitis (E.Coli 0157:H7 - which was the strain that killed people who ate at Jack-in-the-box (a burger joint in CA, for those you who don't know) belongs to this category) enteroinvasive E. Coli: same as shigella, with same toxin. causes bloody diarrhea, with WBCs invading the intestinal epithelial cells. there is fever, bloody diarrhea with WBCs. Klebsiella pneumoniae is encapsulated with O-antigen, (which is the red currant color), and causes a pneumonia which produces bloody sputum. causes cavities in lungs. high mortality. Proteus mirabilis is motile, breaks down urea. causes an alkaline urine, due to urea breakup producing NH3 Shigella: humans are ONLY hosts. shigella is ALWAYS pathogenic. shiga toxin causes bloody diarrhea, and shallow ulcers where cells died. (attacks 60S)fever + pus (WBC) now, wasn't that educational? now, when you have your next case of watery or bloody diarrhea, you will know what's going on! yakob at 2:33 PM |
